Which fraction is greatest?
⭐ These are statewide windows, not exact dates. Nearly every state lets districts choose their own days inside the window — so use this to know roughly when, then confirm the exact days on your district calendar.
The testing letter usually lands about two weeks out. That's enough time to worry, and not much else — so families end up cramming a whole year of skills into a few tense evenings.
Knowing the window in advance changes the shape of the whole thing. Six weeks of short, regular practice builds understanding that actually holds — and it lets test week be an ordinary week. Your child walks in having already seen the question types, which is most of what confidence is.

Because in almost every state there is no single date. States publish a testing window — often three to six weeks long — and each district picks its own days inside it. Any site showing you one exact date for a whole state is guessing. Use the window below to know roughly when, then confirm the exact days on your district or school calendar.
Your school district's academic calendar is the authoritative source, and schools usually send a testing letter home two to four weeks ahead. If neither is handy, the school office can tell you in a minute. The state education department links in the table are the next best source.
Six to eight weeks before the window is the sweet spot. That's enough runway for short, regular sessions to build real understanding, without the practice dragging on so long that kids tune out.
20–30 minutes, four or five days a week. Research on spaced practice is consistent here: frequent short sessions produce far more durable learning than occasional long ones. Longer sessions mostly buy fatigue.

They shouldn't have to be. These tests check skills your child has been building all year — nothing on them is new. Children who have practiced steadily walk in recognizing the format and the question types, and that familiarity is most of what calm on test day is made of.

It's the annual test every public school student in grades 3–8 takes to measure how well they've learned that year's state standards. Federal law requires each state to give one in reading and math every year in grades 3–8, plus science at least once in elementary and once in middle school. Each state names and builds its own — STAAR in Texas, CAASPP in California, MCAS in Massachusetts, and so on.
States set their own academic standards and choose their own assessment vendor, so the names, subjects and grade coverage vary. The underlying skills are far more similar than the names suggest — grade-level reading comprehension and math reasoning are the backbone of all of them, which is why general grade-level practice transfers well across states.
It varies, and the trend is away from strict timing. Texas made STAAR untimed in its 2023 redesign; several other states allow generous or full-day windows. Where time limits exist they're usually comfortable. Depth of reasoning, not speed, is what's being measured in most states now.
In most states, a single year's score has no direct consequence for the child — it's used to measure schools and to flag where extra support would help. A few states attach real stakes at specific grades: Texas at grades 3, 5 and 8, and Ohio and Florida at third-grade reading, for example. Your school will tell you if a checkpoint grade applies, and there are usually retest opportunities built in.
Opt-out rules differ by state, and some states have no formal opt-out at all. Your district office is the right place to ask, since participation rates and procedures are handled locally.
